Ah, the days where you had to call someone’s landline to speak to them or even arrange a time and a place to meet in advance and hope for the best! After a read of our books, a little practise of our français and after I had, so kindly, finished off the rest of the bottle (hiccup), we pulled into the Gare du Nord dans Paris (insert French accent here). I realised as I stood up that it was not only excitement that I was dizzy with. We hopped (I stumbled) off the train and, for some reason, I thought that this would be a great opportunity for me to stop in my tracks and take a picture of the Eurostar logo on the side of the train.

That says it all. ’ That ‘c’ word echoed around in my head. They had found a large tumour in her stomach. No. Please, no. It is so difficult to explain in words how I felt at this point. I was hearing the news that, deep down, I had been half-expecting. But that ton of bricks hit me just as hard as if it were coming out of nowhere. I tried with all of my might, with every part of me, to keep calm and keep it together on the phone for my dad. Well, and for me. Someone help us. It was only when I pressed ‘end call’ that I noticed how much I was shaking.

But I did tell you that this was no ordinary city break – far from it! Not only was I there to sightsee and spend quality time with my closest friends, but I was also there on a mission – a mission that involved not one, not two, but 60 postcards. I began to write my message, postcard after postcard but it was only half an hour later when I had to put them to one side to greet someone at the door. The first arrival was my housemate from home, Trent. No stranger to Paris, Trent had found the hidden gem of an apartment without any trouble at all.
