In the first years of German colonial rule, Bagamoyo was the administration centre, the capital. For a long stretch out the sea is very shallow. There was no way to build a harbour here for the big ocean-going ships. While there was a fine sandy beach it was suitable only for the Arab dhows. The big ships had to anchor very far out and loading cargo was a major undertaking. The location could not feed the commercial appetites of the large ocean-going ships. So, in 1890, the Germans moved the capital to Dar es Salaam, which offered a big bay where they could construct a proper harbour.
Then he came back on his first leave. When he departed again, Mother and I stood at the window watching him walking down the road.
