In February 1915 the 5th Native Light Infantry, an Indian Army regiment comprised of Muslim soldiers, mutinied at the instigation of pro-Ottoman civilian agitators. The mutineers tried to release prisoners from the Emden and thirty-two Europeans were killed. In the aftermath the British executed forty-seven of the mutineers. But generally British India proved remarkably loyal, and the Muslims who made 39 THE FIRST YEAR 1914--1915: ESCALATION up about 30 per cent of the population and more than 40 per cent of the army were no different from the Sikhs and Hindus in this respect.

The French nevertheless initially held back from the frontier. The Russian war plan foresaw an early advance both into East Prussia and into Austria’s Polish province of Galicia. The Hapsburg Empire had always assumed that it would mount an offensive against Russian Poland, and it now added a second offensive into Serbia as well. The offensive plans of all these nations have been linked to a supposed ‘short war illusion’. But expert military opinion varied widely as to the anticipated length of a war, and the desire to take the initiative and fight the war on enemy soil was even more logical for those who believed that the struggle might be long and attritional.

One German volunteer wrote on 18 November, ‘Wellbeing is here nothing else than not having to launch an attack across meadows that are completely flooded and poisoned by the odour of putrefaction, but rather to be able to sit peacefully and quietly in a trench with straw that is not completely soaked yet. ’ The need to bail out flooded trenches, evacuate the wounded, and bury the dead combined with shortages of ammunition and sheer tiredness to encourage unofficial local truces. These developed into outright fraternization at Christmas 1914.
